China is strong for tea, ceramics, outdoor gear, electronics accessories, fashion, stationery, and regional crafts. The key is knowing when you are buying a souvenir, when you are buying a regulated product, and when tax refund rules apply.

Tax refund basics

Tax refunds are not automatic. You usually need a participating store, passport, qualifying invoice/refund paperwork, unused goods, and airport or departure-port processing. Thresholds and procedures vary, so ask the store before you buy.

At the store

Ask whether the shop supports departure tax refund for foreign travelers.
Show your passport before payment if paperwork is needed.
Keep the official invoice and refund form.
Do not pack refund goods deep inside checked luggage before customs inspection.
Leave extra time at the airport or port.

Electronics caution

Check voltage, warranty region, language settings, app compatibility, and customs rules at home. A cheap device is not cheap if warranty or software support fails after you leave China.

Markets and bargaining

In tourist markets, bargaining may be normal. In malls, boutiques, museums, and brand stores, fixed prices are normal. Stay polite, compare calmly, and walk away if the interaction becomes pushy.

What to buy

Look for region-specific items: Jingdezhen ceramics, Hangzhou tea, Suzhou silk, Yunnan coffee, Guizhou silverwork, Dunhuang-inspired stationery, or local design brands. The best souvenir has a place story, not just a low price.
